Vie d'acqua tra '800 e '900: pictures of the Lake and the Adda River in local private collections

From Saturday 20th June to Sunday 30th August Villa Monastero and the “Rosa and Marco De Marchi” Room in Varenna will host the exhibition Vie d’acqua tra ‘800 e ‘900: immagini del Lario e dell’Adda nelle collezioni private lombarde, sponsored by the Province of Lecco in collaboration with the Varenna Municipality, on the occasion of Expo 2015.

The exhibition will be open from Tuesday to Sunday from 9:30 am to 7 pm at Villa Monastero, from 10:30 am to 12:30 am and from 3:30 pm to 6:30 pm in the De Marchi Room.

The exhibition, curated by Anna Ranzi, presents a rich collection of paintings (more than one hundred), belonging to private collectors from Lecco and the whole Lombardy, that illustrate the evocative landscape of Lake Como and, in particular, of the eastern branch of the lake. Paintings showing Lake Como are placed side by side with interesting pictures representing the Adda River and with others representing lakes and rivers in Brianza. They are the work of important and significant authors who worked in the area of Lecco during the 19th and the 20th centuries, with particular attention to local authors. Paintings by Gozzi, Canella, Carcano, Prinetti, Lelli, Jotti, Calvi, Spreafico, Grubicy, Cressini, Poma, Bezzi join a great number of paintings by Pizzi, Todeschini, Sora, Gennai, Zago, Monti, Castiglioni, Mozzanica, and finally the Vitali from Bellano. The displayed works are mostly unknown and at their first appearance in a public exhibition, thanks to the generosity of many private collectors.

The exhibition is divided into three sections arranged according to the chronological order: the early 19th century is in the House Museum Villa Monastero, the late 19th century in the Exhibition Room of Villa Monastero and the 20th century in the “Rosa and Marco De Marchi” Room in the town hall of Varenna.

The event has been realised thanks to Family Banker Office Lecco of Banca Mediolanum, that also gave Villa Monastero two important “Views of Venice” as a gift last year, and thanks to Paolo Cattaneo Editore from Oggiono, who published the catalogue of the exhibition.
